Controversy

Waris Pathan has been suspended from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 2016 for disrespecting the country as he refused to say "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" when asked to by BJP legislator Ram Kadam. He however did say ‘Jai Bharat’, ‘Jai Hind’ and ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ he later defended himself saying  'I love my country and will die in my country but I will not say Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ he also said ‘Don’t judge anyone’s love for their country just by one slogan’.

Waris Pathan faced similar problems in 2017.

Waris Pathan was also widely criticized for tendering a public apology as he chanted ‘Ganpatti Bappa Maurya’ at a ganesh mandal in his constituency and told his contituents present that he prays that ‘Lord Ganesha removes all the obstacles from their paths and showers them with happiness’ a move which drew him flak from his party and forced him to release an apology.

Waris Pathan called MNS Chief Raj Thakeray a ‘Buja Hua Diya’ and said that he had to resort to ‘Gundagardi’ to keep his party relevant. This was in response to the MNS’s drive to forcefully remove hawkers from around train stations in Mumbai after the Elphinstone stampede. Waris Pathan ‘dared’ Raj Thakeray to come to his constituency Byculla and remove hawkers.
