Early & Personal Life

Kirit Somaiya was born ito a middle-class family. He is married to Medha Somaiya, they have a son, Neil who joined the BJP and is the Municipal Coumcillor of Ward 108 Mulund. 

Kirit Somaiya graduated as a chartered accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India in 1979 and secured a rank in the All India Merit List. He was conferred with a "Ph.D. in Finance – Capital Market – Small Investors Protection" from Mumbai University in 2005 and is credited for submitted the longest thesis to the University. 

Career

Kirit Somaiya an activist, he took part in the Jayaprakash Narayan movement in 1975. Later on, he joined the BJP and represented the Mulund Constituency of Maharashtra Assembly and the Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha Constituency. In 1995, Somaiya contested the Maharashtra Assembly elections and got elected from the Mulund assembly where he won by a margin of 43,527 votes.

As a M.L.A., Kirit Somaiya got 2 major Acts passed in the Maharashtra Assembly - Small Investors’ Protection Act of Maharashtra, Repealing Coroners Court (Post Mortem) Act and introduced the Housing Society Conveyance Bill. In the 1999 Lok Sabha election, Somaiya defeated Gurudas Kamat of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 7,276 votes.

As a parliamentarian, Kirit Somaiya submitted the maximum number of petitions to the parliament, i.e. 11 (out of 27 total petitions presented in 13th Lok Sabha) during his tenure in the Lok Sabha which was the highest number of petitions submitted by any MP in the history of Indian Parliament.

Kirit Somaiya took on sevel governement officals including politicians for charges of corruption and also filed Public Interest Litigations (PIL), the corruptions include :

NSEL Scam, Coal mining scam, Maharashtra Sadan Scam, Adarsh Scam, Wheat Scam ,Demat Scam, Maharashtra Irrigation Scam.

Controversy

Kirit Somaiya was criticised for participating in Dandiya celebrations the same day 23 people lost their lives in the stampede at Elphinstone Road railway station.

Kirit Somaiya was criticised for saying he will expose "mafia" in Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and also take on their "godfather" which is directed to Shiv Sena cheif Uddhav Thackeray. He also said that the Shiv Sainiks tried to kill him and he registered a complaint to the Mumbai Police Commissioner.
